You Already Know How to Gain Weight, So Do the Opposite to Lose Weight

I stacked on a massive amount of weight during a stint in Germany and this weight gain was actually what taught me what the best way to lose weight was. I was just a skinny and naïve teenager when I moved to Germany in the late 1990’s. I was desperate for work to fund further travel and adventure so I took a night job cleaning McDonalds hamburger machinery. During the day I would also serve up deep fried goodies, at a small family owned restaurant, near Frankfurt.

I got along great with both of my employers and knowing that I was a poor backpacker they provided me with free food while I worked. It was not uncommon for me to eat deep fired apple pies, chips and burgers for lunch and then heaps of coke, ice cream and quarter pounders at night. This was of course fantastic for my bank balance but awful for my waist line. I was skinny at the time though and pretty ignorant so it did not bother me at all.

I certainly lived to regret that ignorance! I love food so while I was eating like this during the week I would also spend my weekends sampling all the fantastic breads, cakes, deserts, beer and fatty sausages that Germany had to offer. Before I even realised it I was overweight. Not only that but the weight gain changed my mood and all of a sudden I was regularly grumpy and depressed which was completely out of character for me.

I had struggled to put on weight my whole life and then within just 6 months I had completely blown up and I knew I had to do something about it. I started to think about what the best way to lose weight is and I quickly realised that I just needed to do the opposite of what had caused the weight gain.

In my case it was pretty obvious what caused it so I set some goals and made some slow changes to my diet. I didn’t just change completely in one day, I slowly changed my habits over the course of two months until I had slowly eradicated all fatty foods from my diet.

Those first two months were very tough (I won’t lie!) but it did become easier each week. I swapped hamburgers for salad sandwiches, beer for champagne, chips for fruit and I had lost all the additional weight in the same time that I had put it on. A complete reversal.

Did you stop playing sport? Did you change your diet? Did you become less active in your daily life? I know this may seem overly simplified but if you know what caused your weight gain then the best way to lose weight is just to do the opposite.
